PhD Defence: Artificial Intelligence in the Classroom – what, why and how?

Please join the defence on Thursday, March 30th 2023, 14-16. Magnus Høholt Kaspersen

During his Ph.D. studies, Magnus has conducted a thorough design inquiry into artificial intelligence in the classroom of secondary schools. His work seeks to empower students to approach AI critically and scaffold the understanding necessary to do so. The work centers on six prototypes of learning tools and activities that have been deployed across several classroom.

Magnus contributes a framework for scaffolding Computational Empowerment in secondary school students with regards to AI with a particular focus on its technological foundations. He then contributes a set of six principles for designing learning tools and activities. Finally, he broadens the discussion to AI systems design, and argues for remarkableness as a central concepts for designers to consider to support Computational Empowerment in everyday AI systems.

The PhD study was completed at Department of Computer Science, Faculty of Natural Sciences, Aarhus University.
